Financing an Indie Film

Posted by Markus On December - 18 - 2011

Every screen writer has one dream and it’s to get their screenplay made into a feature film. The only problem with this dream is that it’s hard to make it become a reality, especially in this day and age of economic uncertainty.

Thankfully, there are a wide variety of things that any screen writer or producer can do to get their dream movies made and watched by audiences on the silver screen.

Step 1 – Hire Telemarketers

It might sound cheesy but telemarketing still does work in this day and age. Hire two telemarketers, offer to pay them a high commission on any deals that they close then give them a list of high earners like doctors, lawyers or bankers and have them go to work making calls.

To make this strategy work you should have a professionally designed media kit to fax or email out just so the people that your telemarketers call know that a real film is going to be produced and it’s not a scam.

Step 2 – Hobnob with the Rich

Even if you don’t live in Los Angeles you can still get a rich person to finance all or part of your indie film if you know where rich people live and work in your local area. This step might include you getting a part time job at a local resort or golf course but, if you can be everywhere the rich are and have the opportunity to pitch someone your indie movie idea, you could find yourself in the money quicker than you imagined.

Step 3 – Offer A Part in the Movie

It’s the oldest strategy in the book but it still works if you’re desperate to get your movie made at any cost. To make this strategy work, find someone who is able to invest a sizable amount in your movie then offer them a small, but visible role in the movie. Even if that person can’t act, they will still love the idea of telling people that they were in a Hollywood movie back in the day.

Finally, you can take the money that you have and learn to make it work for you with options like investment banking training.
